Pope Leo Advocates for AI Disarmament Following Gandalf’s Principles

Pope Leo XIV, accompanied by the co-founder of Anthropic, has released his first encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas” in Rome. The document emphasizes the need to “disarm” artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure it serves the common good. The Pope stated that the term “disarmament” was chosen intentionally to provoke thought and inspire action against the misuse of AI, which he argues often leads to domination, exclusion, and violence. Spanning 40,000 words, the encyclical critiques the use of AI in autonomous weapons, the neo-colonial practices surrounding data collection, and the concentration of ownership over digital assets, patents, and technological infrastructure.

Why It Matters

The Pope’s encyclical comes at a critical time as AI technology continues to advance rapidly and raise ethical concerns. Historical instances of technology being weaponized underscore the importance of addressing the potential for AI to exacerbate inequalities and conflicts. As nations grapple with the implications of AI in warfare and surveillance, the call for a framework that prioritizes ethical considerations is increasingly relevant. The encyclical aims to guide discussions on the responsible development and use of AI, ensuring it contributes positively to society rather than becoming a tool for oppression.
