Google launches age-assurance technology for Android developers globally

Google has announced the global expansion of its Play Signal API, a tool designed for Android developers to identify younger users and provide age-appropriate experiences. Currently available in Brazil, the API will initially roll out to Australia and Canada by mid-August and is set to reach all markets by the end of 2026. Similar to Apple’s age-assurance tools, Google’s technology allows developers to access a user’s age range without needing personal information like date of birth. Parents can directly share their child’s age range through a centralized parental controls dashboard, Family Link, streamlining the process of managing age-related information across different apps. However, parents must opt in to share this information, which is not disclosed by default. This feature joins other safety measures on Google Play, enabling parents to monitor app downloads and set screen-time limits.

Why It Matters

The introduction of the Play Signal API reflects a growing trend among tech companies to enhance child safety and privacy in digital spaces. As concerns over children’s online safety escalate, particularly regarding data privacy, age-assurance technologies have become essential for app developers. Historically, both Google and Apple have faced scrutiny over how they handle user data, especially for minors. By providing parents with tools to manage their children’s app usage and age visibility, Google is positioning itself as a leader in responsible tech development that prioritizes user safety and compliance with emerging regulations regarding children’s online privacy.
