Valve Sponsors Development of Open-Source RADV Driver for Windows

Valve is financially supporting Collabora’s initiative to port the open-source RADV Vulkan driver from Linux to Windows. The team has already successfully demonstrated Counter-Strike 2 running using RADV, but a stable interface or compatibility shim is required to accommodate undocumented changes in the driver. Louis-Francis Ratte-Boulianne detailed in a blog post that the project involves integrating RADV with Windows’ WDDM2. A significant challenge is the dependency on the proprietary AMD Radeon Software Windows kernel driver, which is outside the scope of current efforts to port the AMDGPU Linux kernel graphics driver to Windows. Consequently, the team is reverse-engineering components of the proprietary driver to adapt RADV for effective use on Windows systems.

Why It Matters

This development is significant as it represents a step toward increasing compatibility for open-source graphics drivers on Windows, a platform that traditionally relies on proprietary drivers. The RADV Vulkan driver is crucial for enabling high-performance graphics for gaming and other applications. By porting RADV to Windows, the initiative could enhance the performance and accessibility of open-source graphics solutions, potentially impacting the gaming community and developers who prefer open-source technologies. Historically, the reliance on proprietary drivers in gaming has limited options for users, making this project a noteworthy advancement in the push for greater openness in software development.
