China has executed 11 members of the Ming family, a notorious mafia clan involved in scams and organized crime in Myanmar, according to state media. The family, sentenced for crimes including homicide and fraud, saw their operations collapse in 2023 after being detained by ethnic militias. This move by Beijing aims to deter future scams, although such activities have now shifted to areas with less Chinese influence, like Cambodia and Laos. The UN estimates that hundreds of thousands, including many Chinese, are trafficked for online scams in Southeast Asia.
