Canadians can look forward to the Commonwealth Games, with coverage set to begin Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET on CBC and CBC Gem. The opening ceremony will broadcast live from Glasgow, featuring hosts Andi Petrillo and Paralympic cycling medallist Nathan Clement. CBC Sports will provide over 1,200 hours of coverage over the 10-day event from July 23 to August 2, showcasing daily broadcasts that include major sports competitions. A panel of Canadian athletes, including Olympic medallists Brittany MacLean Campbell, Perdita Felicien, and Donovan Bailey, will join Petrillo in the studio. The coverage will feature live events from swimming, athletics, gymnastics, judo, and other sports, with a team of veteran broadcasters leading the play-by-play commentary. Canada will send over 148 athletes, including a record 34 Para athletes, aiming for a top-three finish in the medal standings.

Why It Matters

The Commonwealth Games, involving 74 nations and territories, serves as a significant international multi-sport event, promoting unity and competition among Commonwealth countries. Historically, the Games have been a platform for emerging athletes and have showcased sports that are less prominent in other international competitions. With Canada participating in nine sports and aiming for a strong medal performance, the Games are crucial for building national pride and supporting the athletes’ development. The event also highlights the increasing inclusion of Para athletes, reflecting broader societal shifts towards inclusivity in sports.
