Canadian Coast Guard captain dismissed for ignoring distress call

The Canadian Coast Guard dismissed Captain Lou Callaghan for allegedly ignoring a mayday call from the sinking mussel boat Knot a Chance in Malpeque Harbour on May 13, 2024. The Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board found Callaghan willfully disregarded his duty, as he delayed responding for 13 to 17 minutes despite being informed of the situation. Callaghan argued he believed vessels should await direction to respond and claimed he did not hear the distress calls, but the board upheld the dismissal.
