Canada has officially launched its latest population census, which began on May 4. Residents are receiving invitation letters by mail containing instructions on how to complete the census questionnaires, a process mandated by law. André Loranger, the chief statistician, emphasized the importance of the census in understanding the country’s evolving demographics. The information collected will play a crucial role in guiding government decisions regarding essential services, such as healthcare and education, according to Michael Hann from Statistics Canada. In addition to the population census, a separate agriculture census is also being conducted to gather data on the country’s agricultural sector.
Why It Matters
The census, conducted every five years, is vital for accurate planning and resource allocation by the government. The last census in 2021 occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly affected living and working patterns. Comprehensive data from the census informs decisions regarding infrastructure, healthcare, and education, impacting communities nationwide. The agriculture census also provides essential insights into the farming sector, supporting policies that benefit both farmers and the broader economy.
