US prosecutors to seek death penalty for Luigi Mangione in CEO murder case

US prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a premeditated attack in December. Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal prosecutors to pursue the penalty for the “cold-blooded assassination”, citing the murder as an act of political violence. Mangione faces multiple state criminal counts in New York, including first-degree murder and terrorism-related charges, as well as federal charges of using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death, making him eligible for the death penalty.
