The mother of Tumbler Ridge shooting survivor Maya Gebala is suing OpenAI and ChatGPT for failing to alert authorities about threats posed by Jesse Van Rootselaar, who used the platform to discuss gun violence. The lawsuit claims that despite warnings from monitoring staff, the company closed Van Rootselaar’s account without notifying law enforcement, allowing further planning of the February 2026 mass shooting that left several dead. Maya remains in intensive care with severe injuries. OpenAI has 35 days to respond to the legal action.
