RCMP have located the body of a 13-year-old girl in Cultus Lake, British Columbia, after a three-day search following a suspected drowning incident. The recovery team found her approximately 20 meters underwater around 2 p.m. PT on Monday. It is believed that the girl experienced a medical emergency while paddleboarding without a life jacket on Saturday and subsequently fell into the water. Chilliwack RCMP expressed condolences, noting the tragedy of the situation. The search began after police received reports of a possible drowning, leading teams to focus on the Entrance Bay area, where visibility was severely affected by heavy silt. The case has now been handed over to the B.C. Coroners Service for further investigation. The RCMP have also highlighted a concerning rise in accidental drownings in the province, urging the public to take extra precautions when near water.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the growing concern regarding water safety in British Columbia, where accidental drownings have seen a 54 percent increase compared to the previous year. The RCMP have reported frequent near-drowning incidents at Cultus Lake, emphasizing the importance of wearing life jackets and being aware of swimming risks. Recent cases have illustrated the dangers of paddleboarding without proper safety measures, with multiple incidents occurring at the lake within a short timeframe. Public safety campaigns and access to life jackets are critical in preventing such tragedies, making awareness and education vital for water-related activities.
