Evacuation order issued due to wildfire near Pemberton, B.C.

Officials in British Columbia have issued an evacuation order for the area south of Pemberton due to a rapidly spreading wildfire known as the Signal Hill fire. Detected on Wednesday afternoon, the fire quickly expanded to 10 hectares and is located approximately five kilometers from Highway 99. The evacuation order specifically affects One Mile Lake Park to ensure safety for firefighting crews. The B.C. Wildfire Service has mobilized an initial response team of 20 personnel, alongside aerial support, including a helicopter and air tankers. The fire is suspected to be human-caused, and it is one of eleven new wildfires reported in the province within the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, other significant wildfires, including the Brunswick complex near Boston Bar, continue to threaten areas along Highway 1, with multiple evacuation orders in effect.

Why It Matters

Wildfire activity in British Columbia is of significant concern due to the province’s history of devastating wildfire seasons, particularly in the last decade, which have been exacerbated by climate change and increasing temperatures. With 29 active wildfires reported, including ten classified as out of control, the urgency for evacuation and firefighting efforts is critical. The B.C. Wildfire Service has noted that dry lightning, combined with ongoing drought conditions, presents a heightened risk for new fires across the region. As a precaution, fire bans are being implemented, reflecting the growing awareness of the fire danger in the province’s southern interior.
