Boys, ages 11 and 12, attack 8-year-old with bear spray

Hamilton police reported that two boys, aged 11 and 12, assaulted an eight-year-old with bear spray in an east Mountain neighborhood on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near Upper Ottawa Street and Rymal Road, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, who arrested the suspects shortly after. Earlier that day, the older boy had allegedly broken into a Canadian Tire store and stolen the bear spray. Due to Canadian law, the 11-year-old cannot face criminal charges and was released into parental care, while the 12-year-old is facing multiple charges, including assault with a weapon. Additionally, the 12-year-old has been linked to a break-in at a vape store in July, leading to further charges. Hamilton police noted a significant rise in bear spray-related incidents involving minors, with such cases increasing by 115% from 2021 to 2025.

Why It Matters

The increase in bear spray-related crimes in Hamilton highlights a growing concern about youth violence and the accessibility of dangerous items. The Hamilton Police Service has documented a sharp rise in these incidents, indicating a troubling trend in both assaults and robberies involving children and teenagers. The legal framework in Canada, which protects younger offenders from criminal charges under the age of 12, raises questions about accountability and prevention strategies. As communities contend with rising crime rates involving minors, this incident underscores the need for effective safety education and intervention programs to address the root causes of youth delinquency.
