Jewish group advocates for increased security funding in Ottawa

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is calling on the Canadian government to boost funding for security measures in light of recent attacks on Jewish institutions in Canada. Following warnings from Canada’s Integrated Threat Assessment Centre about the potential for violent mass attacks, CIJA’s CEO Noah Shack highlighted the urgent need for systemic changes to protect the Jewish community. In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney dated April 15, CIJA estimated that annual security costs for Canadian Jewish communities could reach $100 million. This appeal has garnered support from over 80 Jewish organizations across the country. CIJA noted that Canada’s per-capita investment in Jewish community security is significantly lower than that of the United Kingdom and Australia. They emphasize the importance of proactive measures to prevent potential tragedies, referencing past violent incidents in other countries as cautionary tales.

Why It Matters

The increase in antisemitic attacks in Canada reflects a broader trend of rising hate crimes against Jewish communities globally. In recent years, there has been a noted escalation in violence against Jewish institutions, with incidents including arson and shootings. The CIJA’s call for enhanced security funding underscores the financial burden these communities face in safeguarding their institutions. Historical data shows that inadequate security measures can lead to devastating consequences, making the request for increased investment in community safety particularly significant in the current climate of rising antisemitism.
