Parks Canada is working to combat white-nose syndrome, a lethal fungal infection threatening the bat population in Alberta. Crews are applying a mix of bacteria in bat caves to inhibit the fungus’s growth. Biologist Nina Veselka reported witnessing severe impacts at a Jasper National Park cave, where bat fatalities have surged from three to approximately 69 in recent counts. The fungus, which thrives in cold, damp environments, disrupts bats’ hibernation, leading to starvation as they burn fat reserves prematurely. While the fungus poses no danger to humans, it can decimate up to 98 percent of bat colonies, contributing to a potential local extinction of certain species.
