Calgary dentist Alena Smadych was sentenced to three years in prison for a decade-long insurance fraud scheme, having defrauded five insurance companies of nearly $700,000. Despite her defense citing health issues, the court denied an adjournment, noting Smadych’s ongoing fraudulent activities during the investigation. She admitted to falsifying over $684,000 in billings between 2013 and 2023, with a history of similar offenses. Smadych, who is no longer practicing dentistry, previously faced fraud charges in 2007.
