Alberta Premier Danielle Smith refrained from commenting immediately after the federal election was called for Mark Carney’s Liberals, raising tensions between Alberta and Ottawa. The Liberals’ fourth consecutive win has intensified discussions about Alberta’s potential separation from Canada, with ex-UCP organizer Cameron Davies criticizing the Liberal campaign and calling for a reimagined confederation to prevent a separatist movement. Smith warned of a national unity crisis if the new government does not address policies detrimental to Alberta’s oil and gas sector, with Preston Manning echoing concerns about Carney as a threat to national unity.
