Alberta proposes new southern pipeline plan to British Columbia coast

Shahin Dashtgard, a sedimentologist at Simon Fraser University, has raised concerns about the proposed pipeline terminal at Roberts Bank, British Columbia. The area’s sub-surface conditions, characterized by weak, water-saturated sand, pose significant risks, particularly the potential for liquefaction during earthquakes. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have endorsed a new pipeline route, mostly aligning with the existing Trans Mountain corridor, but it will include a deviation through the Fraser Valley to Roberts Bank. This route has sparked worries over seismic and environmental impacts, as well as local First Nations’ concerns. Moreover, the proposed pipeline would coincide with the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion, which aims to enhance the Port of Vancouver’s capacity.

Why It Matters

The proposed pipeline and port expansion are significant due to their potential environmental impact on the sensitive Roberts Bank ecosystem, which is critical habitat for various species, including Pacific salmon and Southern Resident killer whales. The area already faces industrialization pressures, and the combined effects of increased tanker traffic and infrastructure development could exacerbate environmental risks. Historically, similar projects have faced strong opposition from local communities and environmental groups, highlighting the ongoing tensions between resource development and ecological preservation in British Columbia. The project is under review by the Major Projects Office, with a decision expected by October, reflecting the broader national interest in balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
