RCMP investigates Edmonton business linked to Alberta health procurement probes

RCMP officers have been conducting searches at the Edmonton offices of businessman Sam Mraiche, linked to ongoing investigations into Alberta’s health procurement practices. Witnesses reported seeing police activity at Mraiche’s companies, MHCare Medical and Carver PA Corporation, since Tuesday. RCMP spokesperson Jessica Murphy confirmed the execution of multiple search warrants but could not disclose further details to maintain the investigation’s integrity. The probe, which began in February 2025, follows a complaint regarding contracting practices at Alberta Health Services (AHS) and is tied to a wrongful dismissal lawsuit filed by former AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos. The lawsuit alleges she was terminated for questioning multimillion-dollar contracts, claims that have not been tested in court. Investigations also involve contracts awarded to Mraiche’s companies during the COVID-19 pandemic for personal protective equipment and children’s medication.

Why It Matters

The scrutiny of Alberta’s health procurement practices is significant because it involves large public contracts and potential conflicts of interest. Investigations by the RCMP, the auditor general, and a retired judge were prompted by allegations of misconduct related to contracts during a critical period in the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of these investigations could have substantial implications for public trust in healthcare governance in Alberta, as well as for the individuals and businesses involved in these contracts. The ongoing scrutiny reflects broader concerns about accountability in public sector procurement.
