Tunisia’s Rached Ghannouchi Begins Hunger Strike
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s Ennahdha Party, has initiated a hunger strike in solidarity with Jawhar Ben Mbarek, an opposition member sentenced for “conspiracy against state security.” Ben Mbarek has been on a hunger strike since October 29, raising concerns about political prisoners’ conditions. The Coordination Committee of Families of Political Prisoners reported that several activists, including Republican Party Secretary-General Issam Chebbi, have joined the protest. Amnesty International has expressed alarm over Ben Mbarek’s deteriorating health amid a crackdown on dissent by President Kais Saied.
