Number of Public Service Jobs Being Cut by Government
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The federal budget released by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Nov. 4 revealed that the public service will lose approximately 40,000 jobs by the end of the 2028-29 fiscal year, with around 30,000 job losses expected over the next three years. While cuts have begun, future reductions will primarily occur through attrition, and $1.5 billion has been allocated for early retirement incentives. Additionally, 650 executive full-time equivalents, equating to about 1,000 jobs, will be eliminated by the end of the 2027-28 fiscal year, although specific departmental impacts remain unclear. The government seeks to achieve up to 15% savings across most departments, excluding certain key agencies.
