Florida softball’s tradition of wearing sunflowers in their hair symbolizes a deep connection to pediatric cancer awareness, stemming from their relationship with Heather Braswell, a young girl diagnosed with brain cancer. This bond began in 2009 through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, where the team supported Heather during her treatment, and continued even after her passing in 2014, inspiring the Gators to adopt sunflowers as a tribute. The team honors her legacy annually with a “Yellow Game” in April and maintains a dedicated locker for Heather, reminding them that there are things bigger than sports.
