Calgary seeks $342 million to repair leaky pipes over four years

City officials in Calgary are proposing a $342 million investment over the next four years aimed at reducing the city’s water loss due to leaky pipes. Last year, Calgary lost approximately 23 percent of its treated water to leaks, a trend that has persisted since 2019, with losses consistently ranging between 20 and 24 percent annually. The proposed budget, which will be debated by the city council this fall, seeks to lower water loss to 15 percent by 2030 and is roughly double the city’s current spending on leak reduction. Mayor Jeromy Farkas supports the initiative, emphasizing that investing in infrastructure will ultimately save money and enhance overall system efficiency. The investment will fund new water meters, leak detection, repairs, and maintenance of aging pipes, as officials recognize the need for improved monitoring to mitigate the issue.

Why It Matters

Calgary’s water loss through leaks is significantly higher than the national average of 17 percent, with neighboring Edmonton reporting only about 5 percent loss. The persistent leaks are attributed to chronic underinvestment in water infrastructure over the past 15 years, which has exacerbated the problem. The city’s complex water system, combined with geographical factors like gravelly soil, makes detecting leaks more challenging. Addressing this issue is crucial not only for conserving water but also for avoiding the higher costs associated with building new water treatment facilities in the future.
