Former Israeli officials accuse Netanyahu government of failing in Iran war

Three former senior Israeli officials have sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, accusing it of “hijacking” the country and failing in its military objectives against Iran. In an article published in Haaretz, former army chiefs Dan Halutz and Moshe Yaalon expressed discontent with the government’s detachment from the realities faced by Israeli citizens, suggesting that state resources are being treated as private property by Netanyahu and select officials. They called for the public to reclaim control of the country ahead of the upcoming general elections in October. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak added that, despite inflicting damage on enemies, Israel has not achieved its war objectives, as Hamas remains in Gaza and Hezbollah continues to operate in Lebanon. He characterized the situation as a significant strategic failure, stating that Israel has become increasingly subordinate to U.S. directives.

Why It Matters

The criticism of Netanyahu’s government comes amid ongoing military operations in the region, including attacks that have resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Since March 2, Israeli strikes on Lebanon have reportedly killed over 2,294 people, while a war against Iran has resulted in more than 3,000 fatalities. The geopolitical landscape is further complicated by U.S. involvement, with America exerting considerable influence over Israeli military strategy and operations. This situation underscores the challenges Israel faces in achieving its strategic goals while navigating complex regional dynamics and internal dissent.
