IRGC closes Strait of Hormuz until US interference ends

The Iranian regime has declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until further notice following an incident on Saturday night, where a vessel was struck for attempting to navigate an unauthorized route. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy stated that the ship disregarded warnings and claimed it was “provoked by foreigners.” The IRGC further warned that any retaliatory action from the “enemy” would result in a severe response, targeting bases in the region. The closure will persist until what Iran describes as the end of U.S. interference in the area. A U.S. official confirmed that a commercial cargo ship was indeed hit, despite earlier U.S. demands for Iran to allow free passage through the strait.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes. Historically, tensions in this region have led to significant disruptions in global oil supply and pricing. The ongoing hostilities between Iran and the U.S., alongside the strategic importance of this waterway, highlight potential risks for international shipping and energy markets. Additionally, previous incidents in the strait have escalated into broader conflicts, indicating that the current closure could have far-reaching economic and geopolitical implications.
