A Gisborne job program has successfully placed 31 young individuals into permanent employment over the past year, contributing to a nationwide total of 1,000 placements. The initiative, part of the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs, is managed by Local Government New Zealand and the Ministry of Social Development, focusing on helping those aged 16 to 24 find work. Over the year ending in June, Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz and her team referred 57 young people to the program. The program’s effectiveness is attributed to its tailored approach, which seeks to understand the motivations of each participant and connect them with opportunities in a competitive job market.

Why It Matters

Youth unemployment is a significant concern in New Zealand, often leading to long-term economic and social consequences. The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs aims to address this issue by providing targeted support to young people, which is especially crucial in a post-pandemic job market. Historical data shows that youth unemployment rates can rise sharply during economic downturns, highlighting the importance of initiatives like this one that foster workforce participation among younger demographics. By facilitating job placements, such programs contribute to reducing overall unemployment rates and promoting economic stability.
