Members of the Bangladeshi parliament have elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as president following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin due to health issues. Alamgir, a veteran of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, won the vote with 255 to 88 against opposition candidate Oli Ahmed. The presidency is largely ceremonial, but Alamgir has previously held several ministerial roles and aims to support marginalized communities. His election comes after the BNP returned to power in 2024 following significant protests against the previous government.
