Nearly 250 schools and early learning services have inquired with the Ministry of Education following the discovery of asbestos in a brand of coloured play sand. Sean Teddy, the ministry’s leader of operations and integration, reported that about 150 schools and 90 early learning services raised concerns after the recall of four products, including the Magic Sand sets sold by Kmart NZ. The urgent recall was prompted by tests identifying tremolite asbestos in these coloured sand products. Some schools have temporarily closed for precautionary testing.
