President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to scale back equal-opportunity programmes in the US, rescinding a 60-year-old executive order that implemented equality and diversity initiatives. These orders aim to scrap federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes, calling them “illegal” and “discriminatory”, as well as reform federal hiring practices to focus on merit-based decisions. Trump also issued a separate action urging the private sector to end illegal discrimination and preferences, while revoking the 1965 Equal Employment Opportunity order signed by Lyndon B Johnson.
