A vigil attended by about a hundred people was held in Thorold, Ont., to honor 18-year-old Alina Masud, who died in a car crash. The gathering also protested the city’s last-minute denial of her family’s request for Muslim burial accommodations at a public cemetery. Alina’s burial was ultimately held at the Islamic Cemetery of Niagara after city officials cited a bylaw preventing the accommodation. The Bereavement Authority of Ontario is investigating the case amid community concerns over the lack of Muslim burial spaces.
