Venezuela plans to withdraw from ICC’s Rome Statute
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Venezuela’s National Assembly has voted to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC), amid ongoing investigations into alleged human rights violations by the Maduro government. Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez criticized the ICC, linking it to U.S. interests, and asserting that Venezuela’s leadership has not committed crimes against its citizens. The ICC’s investigation into Venezuela, which paused to allow for internal review, resumed in June 2023 due to insufficient domestic action. The vote also follows the ICC’s decision to close its Caracas office, prompting further criticism from Venezuelan officials.
