A jury in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $375 million for harming children’s mental health and exposing them to sexual exploitation, marking the first successful lawsuit by a US state against the company over child safety. State prosecutors argued that Meta prioritized profits over safety and violated New Mexico’s Unfair Practices Act. Following a six-week trial, the jury found that Meta engaged in misleading practices that took advantage of minors. A second phase of proceedings will address additional penalties and operational changes for Meta.
