ABC staff begin 24-hour strike over pay and working conditions

Hundreds of ABC staff commenced a 24-hour strike on Wednesday after rejecting a 10 percent pay rise offer over three years. The strike, the first at the national broadcaster in two decades, prompted ABC News to switch to a BBC stream at 11 AM AEDT. High-profile employees, including Radio National star Fran Kelly, voiced concerns over inadequate pay and job security, with some team members reportedly stagnant at the same pay level for years. Shadow communications minister Sarah Henderson criticized the strike as a breach of impartiality, arguing that the pay increase offer was reasonable. In response, ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks indicated a change in the definition of “emergency broadcasting,” allowing for staff to return if a significant national event occurs during the strike. The media union MEAA is encouraging the public to avoid engaging with ABC content during the strike.

Why It Matters

The strike at ABC highlights ongoing issues within the media industry regarding pay and job security, particularly for workers facing short-term contracts and limited career advancement. ABC’s current pay offer reflects broader economic pressures and debates about adequate compensation in public broadcasting, which has seen growing calls for better working conditions in recent years. This action marks a significant moment in the history of the ABC, as it is the first labor strike in two decades, indicating rising discontent among employees and the potential for future industrial actions in similar sectors.
