Ukraine and Russia exchange accusations over ceasefire violations during Easter

Russia and Ukraine have exchanged accusations of violating a ceasefire that was declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Orthodox Easter weekend. The truce was set to last for 32 hours, beginning Saturday afternoon. Ukraine’s military reported 2,299 violations by Sunday morning, including drone strikes and artillery assaults, while Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed 1,971 violations from Ukraine, including drone strikes and artillery fire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia would not extend the ceasefire unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accepted its terms, emphasizing that military operations would continue after the truce if no agreement is reached. Despite the ongoing conflict, thousands of Ukrainians gathered to celebrate Easter, though many remained skeptical about the ceasefire’s effectiveness.

Why It Matters

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Ceasefires have been attempted multiple times, often failing to hold as tensions escalate. This situation is further complicated by broader geopolitical dynamics, including stalled negotiations involving the U.S. and other nations. The Orthodox Easter ceasefire was seen as a potential opportunity for peace amid ongoing hostilities, highlighting the challenges of achieving a lasting resolution in a protracted conflict.
