Ukraine urges Europe to oppose Russia’s FIFA reinstatement
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Ukraine is rallying European support to maintain FIFA’s ban on Russia’s participation in international football, with Ukrainian sports minister Matvii Bidnyi arguing that lifting the ban would legitimize Vladimir Putin’s aggression. As UEFA leaders convene in Brussels, FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated the ban has not been effective, a view met with criticism from Bidnyi, who emphasized the importance of international condemnation of Russia’s actions. The Ukrainian government seeks a renewed statement from European nations opposing any sanctions relief for Russia. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also expressed concerns over the push to restore Russian teams amid worsening conditions in Ukraine.
