Turkey to Host COP 31 After Agreement with Australia

Turkey will host COP31 after a compromise with Australia, which had sought to host the conference in Adelaide. Australia’s Climate Minister Chris Bowen was named COP31 president, and a pre-COP event will take place in the Pacific. Despite some disappointment regarding the outcome, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that the agreement prevents the conference from going to Bonn, Germany. Opposition Leader Sussan Ley criticized the decision, labeling the COP as a “talkfest” amid Australia’s significant budget deficits.
