Trump and Macron meet in Washington as Europe pleads for continued help with Ukraine

President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron held a joint press conference at the White House where they discussed the war in Ukraine and the importance of reaching a peace agreement. Trump expressed his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to make a deal to end the war. Macron praised Trump for working with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a rare minerals agreement that would provide security guarantees. Macron emphasized that any peace agreement must uphold Ukrainian sovereignty and allow Ukraine to negotiate with other stakeholders. The meeting took place on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Macron came to Washington to urge Trump not to abandon Ukraine during peace negotiations with Putin. Trump will also meet with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer later in the week.
