The suspect in a Christmas Day 2022 fatal shooting in the southeast Calgary community of Forest Lawn will stand trial in spring 2025.
Defence counsel Derek Jugnauth appeared in Calgary Court of King’s Bench on Friday to schedule the 13-day jury trial for his client, Yosief Hagos.

Jugnauth told Justice David Labrenz the hearing would run from April 7 to 25, 2025, but because of Good Friday and Easter Monday, which are court holidays, only 13 days will be available during the three-week period.

Jugnauth also said he was waiving any period of delay from Dec. 1, when the prosecution would be available and the start of his client’s hearing.
“The delay here, sir, is on me and according to my availability,” he told Labrenz.
Jugnauth said he was only recently retained by the accused.
Hagos, 24, is charged with second-degree murder in the Dec. 25, 2022, shooting death of Samuel Welday Haile, who died in hospital after he was shot around 4:30 a.m. that day in the 2600 block of 36 St. S.E.
Hagos wasn’t arrested until six months after the shooting.
“Since this murder occurred, we continuously followed up on Hagos’ associates and worked with partner agencies to track his whereabouts,” Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said in a released at the time.
Hagos was out on bail for charges related to an armed robbery in Moose Jaw, Sask., when the shooting of Welday Haile occurred.
He remains in custody pending trial.
