This story is a collaboration between CBC News and the Investigative Journalism Foundation (IJF).

A violent stabbing incident on a Toronto subway in summer 2023 left Derek Dyckhoff with over 10 stab wounds, prompting widespread fear among passengers. An investigation revealed a significant rise in transit-related violent crimes across Canada, with Toronto seeing a 160% increase in assaults since 2016. The Toronto Transit Commission acknowledges heightened safety concerns but maintains that the system is objectively safe.
