Measles Outbreak in 2025
In 2025, the U.S. has recorded over 1,000 measles cases, making it the second-most active year for the disease since the official elimination in 2000, with Texas accounting for two-thirds of these cases. “Elimination” signifies that the disease has not spread continuously for at least 12 months, and while sporadic outbreaks have occurred since 2000, current figures pale in comparison to the 27,000 cases in 1990 and 450,000 in 1964. The introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963 drastically reduced mortality rates associated with this highly contagious disease.
