Elwood Edwards, the voice behind the iconic phrase “You’ve got mail!” for America Online in 1989, passed away at the age of 74. His wife volunteered his voice for the software, and he recorded the phrases on a cassette deck in his living room for $200. Edwards also voiced other AOL sayings like “Welcome,” “File’s done,” and “Goodbye,” becoming a cultural phenomenon in the ’90s and early 2000s.
