The fearless mindset of the Warriors’ Brandin Podziemski: ‘He’s got a delusion to him’

SAN FRANCISCO — Almost a year ago, Mike Dunleavy, the future general manager of the Golden State Warriors, and Kent Lacob, an up-and-coming front office voice, drove 50 miles south to Santa Clara’s campus. Their main purpose was to watch Maxwell Lewis, a potential lottery pick from Pepperdine. While Lewis played well and eventually got drafted 40th in the 2023 NBA Draft, it was Brandin Podziemski, a 6-foot-4 guard who was just starting to gain attention as an NBA prospect, who stole the show. Podziemski’s impressive performance, including 23 points and 18 rebounds, caught the attention of Dunleavy and Lacob, leading them to consider him as a potential first-round pick.

Podziemski’s journey continued as he competed in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend last Friday. Leading all NBA rookies with 14 games of at least 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists, he is a strong contender for the All-Rookie first team. Despite turning 21 this week, Podziemski has already made a significant impact on the Warriors, earning a spot in the starting and closing lineups and becoming an essential player in head coach Steve Kerr’s preferred five-man group.

The relationship between Podziemski and the Warriors began that February night at Santa Clara, where he first caught their attention as a prospect. Over the following 12 months, he impressed every level of the organization, particularly his veteran teammates, earning their respect and admiration.

Podziemski’s potential was further showcased at the draft combine in Chicago in May, where he outperformed expectations athletically and began to receive first-round buzz. Despite facing obstacles and limitations, Podziemski continued to prove his doubters wrong, showcasing his determination and competitive spirit.

After impressing the Warriors during in-person workouts and film sessions, Podziemski solidified his position as a top-10 prospect on the team’s final draft board. Ultimately, the Warriors selected him with the 19th overall pick, marking Dunleavy’s first draft selection as general manager.

Throughout his rookie season, Podziemski has continued to impress his teammates and coaches with his work ethic, basketball IQ, and competitiveness. Despite facing challenges early on in summer league, he remained focused and dedicated to improving his game, ultimately earning a spot in the Warriors’ rotation and making a significant impact on the team.

As Podziemski’s career continues to unfold, his potential for growth and success has become evident to those around him, including his veteran teammates and coaching staff. With his talent, work ethic, and competitive spirit, Podziemski has the potential to become a key player for the Warriors and a future All-Star in the NBA.
