What You Need to Know
• The Food and Drug Administration approved Moderna’s mRNA seasonal flu vaccine, named mFLUSIVA, on Wednesday.
• The vaccine is expected to be available for individuals aged 50 and older during the 2026-2027 respiratory illness season.
• In clinical trials, the mRNA vaccine showed a 27% reduction in confirmed flu cases compared to the standard vaccine.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Moderna, Inc.’s mRNA seasonal flu vaccine, mFLUSIVA, on Wednesday. This vaccine is anticipated to be accessible for individuals aged 50 and older during the 2026-2027 respiratory illness season. Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna, emphasized the importance of this approval, stating that flu remains a significant public health challenge and that mFLUSIVA offers a new option for seniors. In clinical trials involving participants aged 50 to 64, mFLUSIVA demonstrated a 27% decrease in confirmed flu cases compared to the existing standard vaccine. Although the safety profile of the mRNA vaccine was comparable to the standard vaccine, more participants reported mild side effects, which typically lasted two days or less. Moderna plans to monitor the vaccine’s performance this winter and submit data to the FDA regarding its efficacy for individuals aged 65 and older.

Why It Matters

The approval of Moderna’s mFLUSIVA vaccine is significant as it represents a new approach to flu prevention for older adults, a demographic particularly vulnerable to severe flu complications. The FDA’s decision follows a previous indication that it would not review the vaccine, highlighting the evolving landscape of vaccine development and regulatory processes. The mRNA platform has been recognized for its potential to expedite vaccine production and adapt to circulating virus strains, which is crucial in addressing public health challenges. This approval also reflects ongoing advancements in vaccine technology and the importance of innovative solutions in combating seasonal illnesses.
