• Business applications from Generation Z increased by 66% in June 2023 compared to the previous year.

Melanie Herbert, a 23-year-old entrepreneur and founder of Sync Labs, launched her health technology startup while studying at the University of Pennsylvania to improve healthcare for older Americans. Herbert’s personal experiences with hospital treatments inspired her to address the communication gaps in healthcare. Research from the Bank of America Institute indicates that Generation Z is significantly contributing to a rise in business formation, with a 66% increase in new business applications filed by this demographic in June 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. Overall, more than 531,000 business applications were submitted in June 2023, more than double the number from 2020.

Why It Matters

The rise of entrepreneurship among younger Americans, particularly Generation Z, reflects a shift in attitudes toward employment and self-employment. The increase in business applications signifies a broader trend of young individuals seeking to create their own opportunities rather than working for established companies. Additionally, the growing representation of lower-income households in new business formations highlights the democratization of entrepreneurship, allowing a more diverse range of individuals to contribute to economic growth. This trend is crucial for understanding the evolving landscape of the U.S. economy and the role of younger generations in shaping it.
