Death Valley National Park: Ancient Lake Reappears After Heavy Rain
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

An ancient lake has reemerged at Death Valley National Park after record rainfall, forming a small Lake Manly in Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. During the Ice Ages, Lake Manly was once up to 700 feet deep, fed by rivers from the Sierra Nevada. Recent rainfall has created a shallow lake that may prompt a superbloom of wildflowers in the spring, with the water reflecting the surrounding mountain peaks. The park remains open to visitors, but caution is advised due to storm damage, and the upcoming Dark Sky Festival in February will offer unique stargazing opportunities at the Gold Tier Dark Sky Park.
