Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been indicted for insurrection, accused of attempting to provoke military aggression from North Korea to justify his declaration of martial law in December 2024. Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok stated that Yoon and 24 others plotted for over a year, seeking military support while branding opponents as “anti-state forces.” The martial law declaration was deemed unconstitutional, leading to Yoon’s impeachment and imprisonment. Under South Korean law, insurrection carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
