UN Officials: Darfur City Capture by Rebels Shows Signs of Genocide

An 18-month siege in Darfur by Sudanese rebels has been described by UN experts as bearing the hallmarks of genocide, with mass killings and human rights abuses attributed to the Rapid Support Force (RSF) in el-Fasher. The conflict, which began in 2023, resulted in over half the city’s population being slaughtered, particularly targeting non-Arab communities. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has called for urgent international action for accountability and justice. The situation escalated dramatically when RSF and allied militias overran el-Fasher in October 2024, leading to thousands of civilian deaths and widespread atrocities.
