Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan, 33, was found dead in his barracks at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, on January 23, 2020, three weeks after he was last seen, with his cause of death still ‘unascertained’ due to decomposition. During the inquest, friends described Mongan as being ‘humiliated’ and ‘degraded’ by superior officers, who often treated him harshly, contributing to his mental health struggles. Despite having a positive outlook before his death, he had previously attempted suicide multiple times and had sought help from recovery programs.
