What You Need to Know
• The Social Security Administration announced the addition of 14 new conditions to its fast-track disability list.
• The Compassionate Allowances list now includes a total of 314 conditions, benefiting over 1.2 million individuals.
• New conditions include rare disorders like Aicardi syndrome and various types of cancer, such as primary cardiac sarcoma.

The Social Security Administration, led by Commissioner Frank Bisignano, announced on Tuesday the addition of 14 new medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list, designed to expedite disability benefits for individuals with severe or life-threatening illnesses. This expansion brings the total number of conditions on the list to 314, which has already helped 1.2 million people secure disability benefits more quickly. The Compassionate Allowances initiative utilizes technology to identify qualifying applications, allowing for approvals within days, compared to the typical six to eight months for standard applications. The newly added conditions include rare pediatric and neurological disorders, such as Aicardi syndrome, and certain rare cancers, including primary cardiac sarcoma.

Why It Matters

The Compassionate Allowances initiative was established in 2008 to streamline the disability claims process for individuals facing significant health challenges. By adding these 14 conditions, the Social Security Administration aims to provide timely support to those diagnosed with severe medical issues. Historically, the initiative has proven effective in reducing the wait time for disability benefits, which is crucial for individuals needing immediate assistance. The inclusion of rare disorders and cancers reflects a growing recognition of the need for expedited support for those with complex medical needs.
