Iran appoints AMIA bombing suspect to key security position

For the second time in 2023, Iran has appointed a suspect in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires to a significant security position. Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), has stepped down as an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei to serve as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Rezaei is wanted by Argentina and is subject to an Interpol Red Notice tied to his alleged involvement in the attack that resulted in 85 fatalities, the deadliest terrorist act in Argentina’s history. Earlier this year, another suspect, Ahmad Vahidi, was appointed as IRGC commander. In June 2025, a federal court in Argentina ordered that ten Iranian and Lebanese suspects, including Rezaei and Vahidi, be tried in absentia for their roles in the bombing.

Why It Matters

The appointment of Mohsen Rezaei to a key security role in Iran highlights the ongoing tensions between Iran and Argentina, stemming from the AMIA bombing case. An Argentine court in 2024 established legal responsibility for the bombing with implications for international law, increasing pressure on Iran. The fact that both Rezaei and Vahidi, wanted by Argentina, are being placed in high-ranking positions raises concerns about Iran’s accountability for its past actions and the implications for international relations. This situation could affect diplomatic ties, especially as Argentina seeks justice for the victims of the attack, which remains a significant event in its national history.
