An orphaned squirrel named Peanut, who gained fame on social media, was euthanized after state authorities seized him and a raccoon named Fred from Mark Longo’s home in Pine City, N.Y. due to concerns of potential rabies exposure. Despite pleas for compassion, both animals were euthanized and are being tested for rabies, with those in contact urged to consult a physician. Longo, who runs an animal sanctuary, had taken Peanut in after his mother’s death and was in the process of certifying him as an educational animal before the seizure.
